The Augmented Reality Sandbox is amazing!
A lab at UC Davis, created a a 3D visualization application to teach earth sciences as earlier education programming. Inspired by Czech scientists, this group built an exhibit combining a real sandbox, and virtual topography and
water generated via a Microsoft Kinect IR system.
This project allows students to make alter topography by playing in an actual sand box, which is then augmented via a projector system.
Researchers say, "the system teaches geographic, geologic, and hydrologic concepts
such as how to read a topography map, the meaning of contour lines,
watersheds, catchment areas, levees, etc."
